OVERVIEW
Septage Management
Septage receiving is becoming a common service at municipal wastewater treatment plants around the world. However, septage receiving can be rather tough on treatment plants as septage can be anywhere from 6 to 80 times more concentrated than municipal wastewater. Septage commonly contains significant amounts of grease, scum, grit, rocks, rags, hair, plastics, and other debris. Many of these contaminants can disrupt and even damage the standard treatment processes used for municipal wastewater treatment. Therefore, it’s imperative that septage is well screened before it enters downstream plant processes. Use of the RotoSieve Septage Receiving Unit not only protects the plant from damage caused by untreated septage but may also create an opportunity for revenue streams that were not available to the plant or community in the past.
Septage Receiving Products
Septage receiving is now made easy and convenient using the Roto-Sieve Septage Receiving Unit. With this unit, septage receiving is remarkably clean, efficient, and cost-effective. Trucks can pull up to the unit and unload an entire truck in roughly 15 minutes and have all the septage waste screened, compacted, and put into a waste bin. The compact size make installation easy for any environment. The Roto-Sieve Septage Receiving Unit has various advantages over the standard technologies on the market today. This includes the following:
- High capacity even with high solids content enables fast septage truck unloading.
- No rock trap or grinder is needed. This eliminates the very unsanitary jobs of emptying rock traps daily and maintaining grinders.
- No tank is needed. This eliminates sedimentation problems associated with tank-based septage receiving stations, a common complaint of plant personnel.
- Automatic overflow bypass with overflow sensor and alarm protects downstream processes.
- Self-cleaning design efficiently keeps unit and screen free of debris.
- Reduced odor issues as the unit is completely enclosed and all septage completely exits the unit after every load.
- Innovative drive design of the RotoSieve results in low maintenance and high reliability.
- Low energy use.
- Based on the highly regarded and well proven RotoSieve Drum Screen technology.
- Compact, space-saving design

What is Septage?
Septage is the accumulation of wastewater that has been treated, but is still too dirty to be released into the environment. When wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) process sewage, they produce water and solids. The water is clean enough to release into rivers and streams, but the solids (including fecal coliform bacteria) are not. Septage is created when these solids build up over time and can’t be eliminated with regular wastetreatment.
Septage can contain a number of harmful contaminants, including bacteria and other microorganisms that can cause diarrhea, vomiting, or infections in people. In addition, septage can contain heavy metals such as lead and mercury (which can contaminate rivers and streams).
Septage is typically collected from WWTPs by an effluent treatment plant (ETP) before it is released into the environment. ETPs use a variety of techniques to treat septage so that it becomes free of harmful pollutants. Some methods used include activated carbon filtering, ozonation, and UV irradiation.
How Septage Receiving Works
Septage receiving is an important step in wastewater treatment, and can play a crucial role in keeping your system functioning properly. When wastewater enters the septage receiver, it mixes with bacteria that break down organic material into usable nutrients and water. This process helps to reduce the amount of pollutants in your wastewater, and keeps your system running smoothly.
Benefits of Septage Receiving
Septage is a byproduct of wastewater treatment that can be harmful to the environment if not properly disposed. By receiving and treating septage, wastewater treatment systems are able to reduce the amount of pollutants released into the environment and protect public health. Here are five benefits of septage receiving:
1. Septage reduces pollution levels in wastewater treatment plants.
By reducing the amount of pollutants released into the environment, septage receiving helps to reduce air and water pollution levels. This minimizes adverse effects on human health, aquatic life, and ecosystems.
2. Septage receives reduces odor problems in wastewater treatment plants.
The decomposition process of septage produces ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, and methane gas as byproducts. These gases have a strong odor that can be annoying for residents living near wastewater treatment plants. Receiving and treating septage eliminates this problem by neutralizing these gases before they release into the atmosphere.
3. Septage reduces maintenance costs associated with wastewater treatment plants.
Septage receives can eliminate the need for regularly removing sludge from waste tanks or cleaning filters in wastewater treatment plants. This reduction in maintenance costs can save taxpayers money in the long run since it will require less maintenance resources over time.
4. Septage receives preserves valuable natural resources in waterways downstream from wastewater treatment plants.. By disposing of septage properly, wastewatertreatment systems help prevent pollutants from entering
